A fire has destroyed the small building that houses mailboxes at the Whispering Cedars Apartments on 208th Street SW.

It started in the recycling area Saturday afternoon. By the time firefighters arrived it had spread to the mailbox building. An SUV parked next to the fire sustained heat damage to the passenger side.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to the scene.

The mailbox building was a total loss. Damage is estimated at $27,000. No one was injured.

A postal supervisor was called in to secure the surviving mail.

The was the second significant fire in Lynnwood over the weekend. A child playing with a lighter accidentally started a fire inside a minivan in the 5600 block of 169th Place SW. It was contained to the carpet and rear bench seat area, and caused about $13,000 in damage.
