A year and a half after discussions began about creation of a City of Lynnwood Youth Council, applications for the City of Lynnwood Youth Council are live. The City is seeking 15 local teens to share their voice and make a difference in Lynnwood.
Eligibility:
- Qualified candidates must live in and/or go to school within Edmonds School District boundaries.
- The council is meant for students ages 14-18, but older students who are continuing their education are welcome to apply.
- Members must commit to two monthly meetings.
The meetings will take place in person at the Lynnwood Recreation Center from 6 to 8 p.m. and are open to the public.
The application deadline is April 30.
The Youth Council will represent local youth in city politics by informing the Lynnwood City Council about issues they face. Everyone is encouraged to apply, no matter their experience or lack of in politics or government, their grades or identity.
Serving on the Youth Council provides opportunities for involvement in local government, mentorship, networking, leadership and connection with the community. Selected members will serve up to two years. Seniors can keep their position after graduation for the full term as long as they continue to live in ESD boundaries.
The application was designed to be simple and easy for busy students to complete, with only four questions. Applicants can submit their answers as text, video or a soundbite.
City staff will begin reviewing applications in May, with a launch planned for June 2026.
Spearheaded by Councilmember Derica Escamilla, the City Council began exploring the idea of a youth council in the summer of 2024. The City Council officially greenlit the idea a year later, with about $10,000 built into the 2025-26 budget to get program running.
Learn more and apply on the Youth Council website. Questions can be sent to City staff representative Kelly Schudde at YouthCouncil@LynnwoodWA.gov or via phone: 425-670-5515.
