The ‘Why’ of the Jackson St Jazz Walk
The Seattle Central District was historically one of the few areas in Seattle where African American residents could rent homes or obtain loans to purchase property.
While these redlining practices marginalized African American families, they inadvertently resulted in the creation of a culturally vibrant community, bringing together families, black-owned businesses, churches, creating a strong sense of community. This African American – centered culture also fostered a rich landscape of black-owned nightclubs and music where renowned artists such as Quincy Jones,
Ray Charles, and Ernestine Anderson developed their talents and launched internationally recognized careers.
Over the years, an influx of corporate investment, rising property taxes, and the damaging effects of institutional racism displaced the members of this community, its culture, and its music. Under the leadership of Executive Producer, Eugenie Jones, the Jackson Street Jazz Walk exists to create a MUSIC. COMMUNITY. LEGACY event that honors this legacy and shares its stories to a new generation of residents.
The musical culture that once flourished, along with the artists who shaped it, forms the foundation of the Jackson Street Jazz Walk. The musical offerings presented by the 2025 12th Annual Jazz Week artists are a tribute to the rich African American jazz heritage of the Central District and a contribution to the future of Seattle’s jazz and music legacy.
